ASD News and Views

Ride the tide of growing expectations

Obama’s election is a social phenomenon that has spawned a rising tide of expectations – expectations for progressive social change and social justice. A wave of hope has swept over the constituencies, which ASD holds dear; youth, communities of color, immigrants, GLBT, civil rights activists, left-progressives, labor and the working poor.

Activist San Diego, like all others who organize for social justice, needs to expand our outreach and open the doors of our organization to these new constituencies. If we do not take advantage of this unique political opportunity, the right wing surely will. Obama will progress only as far as the people’s pressure pushes him to do so.

Join us to expand the capacity of all our movement. If you are reading this and have not made a commitment to redouble your (our) efforts, then reach out to us or a similar organization to add your weight to the scales of justice. We simply cannot do it without you. Your donations, dues and membership are certainly part of that equation. More

PLEASE, Join ASD’s 2009 People’s Ball committee meeting for the first time on Monday, Nov. 17th at 7 PM at the Activist Center. We want to plan a Jan. 24th celebration which will consolidate our progress and build our community’s spirit.

There will be tens of millions of Americans who will be ruthlessly thrust aside. As their houses are foreclosed, as their jobs are lost, as they are forced to declare bankruptcy and watch their communities collapse, they will retreat even further into irrational fantasy. They will be led toward glittering and self-destructive illusions by our modern Pied Pipers—our corporate advertisers, our charlatan preachers, our television news celebrities, our self-help gurus, our entertainment industry and our political demagogues...
